PROJECT SMOKEOUT: OVERVIEW AND RESEARCH DESIGN

Released August 2001: This study represents a systematic review of thousands of tobacco industry documents. Sponsored by the American Cancer Society, Texas Division, we focused on creating a historical archive of tobacco industry activity, e.g. collective strategies, corporate policies and power brokering, related to the people of Texas. The Project Smokeout presentation contains ten sections, beginning with an Executive Summary highlighting statements of industry representatives, in their own words. Nine sections contain documents cited in the report. We conclude with a summary of findings and reflect briefly about future policy.

We acknowledge LuAnn Edwards, ACS, TX Associate Director of Prevention, and Kelly Headrick, ACS, TX Director of Governmental Relations, for providing background expertise regarding Texas political and social culture. InfoImagination, directed by Scott Goold, conducted the document research, analysis and graphic presentation. The team thanks Brett Evans, ACS, TX Governmental Relations Intern, and Joel Dunnington, Doctors Ought to Care (Houston), for their additional guidance on this project.

Documents featured in this report derive from online Internet archives made public due to lawsuits against the tobacco industry. We provide copies of all cited documents -- in their original format -- for efficient review of the hundreds of informative pages.
